Back to basics

Let me quote something….

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Let me point out something important here, that is so obvious that its forgetten…..

It doesn’t say all men born north of the Rio Grande…

It doesn’t say all men who speak English…..

It doesn’t say all men that carry an American passport…..

It doesn’t even say all Americans…..

It says all men…..

We are so used to thinking in terms of citizens and non-citizens, native-born and non-native born, that we forget the implications of that statement. We are used to the distinctions between citizens and non-citizens. People in 1787 were used to slavery, but that institution could not survive because it was so repugnant to the basic principles of the United States. Either slavery had to end, or the United States had to end as a nation.

Let me make a bold statement. If we cannot create a world in which every living human being on the planet cannot somehow participate in the American dream, if we cannot create a world in which someone born in Mozambique has the same right to live like an American as someone born in Ohio, then the United States cannot survive as a nation.

Welcome to the 21st century.

Scary isn’t it.
