Hu’s anti-corruption speech

but they left out one really big piece of the puzzle, which is that this is also Beijing’s reaction to the recent corruption scandals in Taiwan involving Chen Shui-Bian. In order to get any real political mileage out of Chen’s problems, Beijing has to clean up (or at least be seen as cleaning up) its own scandals. Chen Shui-Bian’s corruption issues have gotten a huge amount of coverage on the Mainland, but part of the effect of that coverage is to highlight corruption problems on the Mainland, and the speech (and the recent efforts to address corruption) was Hu’s effort to address this.
